From Vintage Kimono to the Runway: KIMONO⁺on’s First Fashion Show

What happens when vintage kimono meets contemporary fashion?

This summer, KIMONO⁺on took on a new challenge.

We made our first fashion show appearance at UPCYCLE FES 2026 in Japan.

For KIMONO⁺on, this was not simply an opportunity to present our products. It was a chance to bring our brand vision to life through fashion, movement, styling, and the atmosphere of a runway.

From “Kimono” to Contemporary Fashion

KIMONO⁺on creates contemporary fashion accessories and fashion items from vintage and pre-loved kimono textiles.

Kimono fabrics have beautiful colors, intricate patterns, and unique textures. Many were originally created with great care and craftsmanship, yet some eventually become unused as lifestyles and fashion change.

We believe these textiles can have another life.

Rather than simply reproducing traditional kimono in a new form, we want to reinterpret their beauty through a contemporary perspective.

Our goal is to make kimono feel natural in today's fashion.

Why a Fashion Show?

Until this point, much of KIMONO⁺on's story had been communicated through individual products — earrings, belts, accessories, and other fashion items.

But a product photograph can only show part of the story.

We wanted people to see how a kimono-inspired piece moves with the body, how it interacts with clothing, and how it changes the overall impression of an outfit.

The runway gave us the opportunity to show the world of KIMONO⁺on as a whole.

Models, styling, movement, photography, video, and the atmosphere of the venue all became part of the same story.

That experience made us realize how powerful it can be to transform a brand concept into an actual visual experience.

“Just Add One.”

One of the ideas we want to share through KIMONO⁺on is simple:

Just add one.

You don't need to completely change your wardrobe to enjoy kimono.

Imagine a simple outfit in black, white, or gray.

Then add just one kimono-inspired accessory.

A single piece can introduce color, texture, history, and individuality to an otherwise simple look.

For us, this is one of the most exciting ways to bring Japanese cultural heritage into contemporary fashion.

Why Our Pieces Are Often One-of-a-Kind

There is another important reason why many KIMONO⁺on pieces are one-of-a-kind or produced in very limited quantities.

A single kimono provides a limited amount of usable fabric.

The pattern, color placement, condition, and available fabric all differ from one kimono to another.

This means that creating thousands of identical pieces is not our goal.

Instead, we embrace the individuality of each textile.

Every piece carries something that cannot be completely reproduced — the character of a vintage kimono and the story of its transformation.

We see this not as a limitation, but as part of the value of upcycling.

What I Felt on the Runway

The moment the fashion show began, something changed.

The pieces that I had designed and created were no longer simply objects.

They were moving.

They were being worn by people.

They were interacting with light, music, movement, and the atmosphere of the venue.

I found myself watching the runway video again and again after the show.

Honestly, I've probably watched it about ten times already.

And every time, I notice something different.

That experience reminded me why I started KIMONO⁺on in the first place.

I don't simply want to make products from kimono.

I want to create new ways for people to experience the beauty of kimono.

A New Chapter for KIMONO⁺on

The UPCYCLE FES 2026 fashion show became an important milestone for KIMONO⁺on.

It showed us that our vision can exist not only in products, but also in fashion shows, photography, video, storytelling, and other creative experiences.

We are still exploring where this journey will take us.

But one thing remains clear:

We want to continue connecting Japanese cultural heritage, sustainable upcycling, and contemporary fashion — and share that connection with people both in Japan and around the world.

The runway was our first step.

And this is only the beginning.
